Town Board enacts graduated tax relief for seniors and disabled residents

NY SULLIVAN — Sullivan Town Board enacted two property tax exemptions at its annual organizational meeting Monday. Local Law No. 1 provides graduated exemptions for seniors 65 and older ranging from 50 percent to 5 percent based on income; Local Law No. 2 extends identical graduated exemptions to persons with disabilities and limited incomes. Both passed unanimously with no public comment.
The board also awarded a $221,536 construction and repair contract to EIF Construction for the Trooper/EMS building, though Supervisor Thomas G. Daviau and Councilor Kerry Ranger dissented in a 3-2 vote. Planning Board Chairman Dave Allen requested the board consider a one-acre minimum lot size for keeping agricultural animals in high-density residential zones to address recurring conflicts over backyard chickens and roosters.
